LG Progress was set up by wife and husband team, Liz and Michael Green.
We believe local government works best when the people within it have the skills, confidence and support they need to do their jobs well. That means supporting councillors to make the most of their role, helping officers understand and work effectively in a political environment, and creating the space for people and teams to tackle difficult issues together.
Liz brings more than 20 years of experience as a councillor, including senior political leadership roles, alongside extensive experience of training, mentoring and facilitation. She loves local government, but also understands its frustrations, pressures and occasional absurdities. Our approach is therefore firmly grounded in the reality of how councils actually work, rather than how an organisational chart suggests they should.
Michael brings experience of political advice, policy, public affairs and the voluntary sector, including work with councils and national local government organisations. His experience brings another perspective to LG Progress and to our understanding of the different relationships around local government.
Our training and development is practical, interactive and tailored to the people in the room. We use discussion, humour and real-life examples to make learning relevant and useful, whether we are working with councillors, officers or both.
We also believe people learn more when a session is memorable. Many of our workshops therefore borrow their themes from books and films, from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy to Pride and Prejudice. It gives people an accessible way into sometimes complicated subjects, creates a common thread through the session and, most importantly, helps the learning stick.
At the heart of LG Progress is a fairly simple idea: better supported councillors and officers work better together, make better decisions and ultimately provide better services for their communities.
